“Rwy’n credu’n gryf mewn Cymru annibynnol, nid achos mod i’n rhamantu am Gymru’r gorffennol ond oherwydd ‘mod i’n credu yn y gymdeithas ddelfrydol y gallai Cymru fod. Mae’n glir nad yw’r system bresennol yn gweithio i ni. Er bod datganoli wedi rhoi hwyliau ar ein cwch, dydyn nhw’n dda i ddim tra bod llinell dynnu tancer San Steffan yn gallu ein llusgo ble bynnag mae’n mynnu. Fel cenedl fach o dan awdurdod angyfartal y DU, ni allwn benderfynu trywydd ein cwrs ein hunain, ac yn aml rydyn ni’n gorfod dilyn arweinyddiaeth plaid wleidyddol na chafodd eu hethol gan Gymru. Wrth i’r system gyfalafol gripio’i ffordd tua’i wely angau ac wrth I’r argyfwng hinsawdd fygwth y blaned a bywydau cenedlaethau’r dyfodol, nawr yw’r amser i ail-feddwl ein ffordd o fyw, a’r fath o fyd yr hoffem ei gynnal ar gyfer y ddyfodol. Rwy’n credu gall y mudiad annibyniaeth fod yn gatalydd i drafod materion fel hyn, a gweithredu arnynt. Mae’n llawer haws i genedl fach fel Cymru newid trywydd, ac arwain y ffordd at ddyfodol gwyrdd, teg a chynhwysfawr sy’n gweithio i’n holl gymunedau. A heb eisiau gor-wneud y trosiad morwrol, gallwn ni dorri’r linell dynnu a dewis y gwyntoedd gorau i lywio ein hunain.”

I firmly believe in an independent Wales, not because I have a romantic vision of Wales’ past but because I truly believe in the ideal society that Wales could be. It’s clear that the present system doesn’t work for us. Despite the sails we have raised on our boat through devolution, they are good for nothing while the tow line of the Westminster tanker drags us in whichever direction it wants. As a small nation caught in the inequality of power of the UK, we cannot decide the direction of our own travel, and often have to follow the lead of a political party which wasn’t even elected here in Wales. As the capitalist system drags itself towards its deathbed and the whole planet and the life of future generations is threatened by the climate emergency, now is the time to re-think our way of living, and the way we want to sustain the future. I believe that the independence movement can be a catalyst for a discussion of these matters as well as a catalyst for action. It is far easier for a small nation like Wales to change tack, and lead the way towards a green future which is fair and inclusive and which works for all communities. Without wanting to overuse the nautical metaphor, we can cut the towing line and choose the best winds to steer ourselves.
